Mocs Linebacker Jay Person Wrecking Opponents Backfields
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Mocs linebacker Jay Person put up monster numbers during his senior year at Bradley Central high school, racking up 25 tackles for a loss.
Now it seems he’s on a mission to duplicate those stats at UTC this year.
Jay Person has gone into beast mode for the Mocs.
How bout 10 tackles for a loss in his last five games.
Said head coach Rusty Wright:”I mean just plays his tail off. I mean you watch that guy play. He plays with great, great effort. Great motor.”
Said Person:”I’ve always been taught that even if you don’t know what to do, just fly to the ball and play 100 percent. Play hard and physical, and it will always make you right.”
Said Wright:”He’s fun to watch when he’s going. That’s the thing. He goes. A guy broke out a couple of times Thursday night, and he chased them down from behind.”
Against Austin Peay last Thursday, Person had three sacks and two forced fumbles.
Said offensive lineman Cole Strange:”He’s a lot bigger. I guess maybe than he looks out of pads. He’s strong. Quick. Got good hands. He’s got a high motor, so you’ve got to block him until the end of the play.”
Said Wright:”We kind of put him there at that boundary end. He can do some things in coverage for us, and then he can rush the passer for us. He can play the run. He plays his tail off. He’s fun to watch out there.”
Person has that coveted pass rushing skill. Speed.
Said Person:”I mess around with the DB’s a lot. I tell them I can run with them all the time and be a DB. Makes you feel good a little bit chasing down quarterbacks and running backs and things like that.”
Perhaps the best thing going for Person.
He’s only a sophomore.
Said Wright:”Football is important to him and being good is important to him, so he works hard at it. He gives himself an opportunity. I think he gives himself an opportunity by playing hard because he wants to be good.”
