Mocs Open Fall Camp With 47 Returning Lettermen
Chattanooga-(WDEF) The Mocs opened fall camp Wednesday afternoon, although it felt more like summer camp with the temperature reaching 95-degrees.
Chattanooga has been the hottest team in the Southern Conference in recent years, and they’re picked to win another league title this season.
UTC has the hype this season.
They’re the three time defending SoCon Champs with 10 pre-season All-Conference players.
So head coach Russ Huesman should feel confident right?
Said Huesman-“I have zero confidence. It doesn’t make any difference what day I come out, I never feel good. I’ve got butterflies every day.”
Maybe the only one with more butterflies than Huesman is quarterback Alenjandro Bennifield. He’s replacing the SoCon offensive player of the year in former Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman.
Said Huesman-“I’ve said it the day Jacob graduated and played his last game that I think Alejandro is a big-time player. He’s got a lot of ability. He has shown unbelievable leadership.”
Said Bennifield-“Making sure the team is mine. I want everyone to know that I’m the leader of this team, and that I’m going to control everything. I want everyone to know that I’m going to lead the team from here on out.”
Lucky for Bennifield, he’s surrounded by a lot of talent.
Said Huesman-“I mean just look at those four wide-outs we have coming back. C.J., Xavier, James Stovall, and Alphonso Stewart. He’s got some weapons there.”
Said Bennifield-“My preference is to pass. I feel like I can get it to faster guys. Let them make plays. That’s their job.”
Defense is stocked with talent as well, led by All-American defensive end Keionta Davis.
Said defensive back Lucas Webb-“The sky’s the limit. I don’t even think the players on this team know how good we can be just because the potential is so high. That’s up to us to put in the work.”
Chattanooga returns 47 lettermen this year, the most in the Huesman era.
Said Huesman-“I think the one thing that we have is I think we’ve got some leadership at every position group, and that’s important.”
