Mocs Prepare For Another Rock’em-Sock’em Match-Up Against the Citadel
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Chattanooga Mocs are coming off their first SoCon loss of the year, and it doesn’t get any easier this week as UTC travels to the Citadel. The Bulldogs option offense is nothing but a big headache…every year.
When the Mocs battle the Citadel…it’s not football. It’s more like keep away. As in the Bulldogs hog the ball with that option offense.
Said head coach Rusty Wright:”They want to shorten the game. Keep it as ugly and as close as they can.”
And time of possession can get real ugly.
Said Wright:”Last year or two years ago they had it for 40 minutes of a 60 minute game, which is a lot.”
Said defensive lineman Ben Brewton:”From my time being here and playing against the Citadel, the games definitely do go faster. Yeah they hold the ball a lot. The game goes faster.”
Reporter:”Can you recall a game against the Citadel and maybe the fewest possessions the Mocs ever had in a game?”
Said Wright:”You’re talking about six or seven possessions maybe total, and one of those is usually somewhere around the end of the half, so it’s not much of a possession.”
Mocs practice gets weird Citadel week.
Said Brewton:”During practice we kind of take the ball out of it and kind of match-up to where like your roll is. So when we take the ball out of it, it gets a lot easier.”
Reporter:”So you practice without a football in football practice?”
Said Brewton:”Yes sir. We practice without a football.”
Citadel’s record is just 2-6, but guess who leads the SoCon in rushing. I wonder.
Said Wright:”Nobody has actually stopped them this year. They have actually self-destructed more than they’ve been stopped. So it will be a long day for us defensively out there. We’re going to have to play well.”
Sure would help the Mocs if stud running back Alym Ford is healthy. He missed last week’s game with a leg injury.
Wright:”He’s day-to-day. We’re going to see how he is as the week progresses. He does a little more every day, so we’ll see.”
