Mocs QB Jacob Huesman Wins SoCon Weekly Honor Again

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week Monday for all games played
Nov. 14. Chattanooga’s Jacob Huesman was named the Offensive Player of the Week. Mercer’s Zach Jackson was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week, while Samford’s Anthony Pistelli was named the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jacob Huesman, Chattanooga, Sr., QB, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Senior quarterback Jacob Huesman accounted for 310 yards of total offense and two touchdowns as Chattanooga topped The Citadel, 31-23 on Saturday. The Mocs earned a share of the league’s conference title with the win and earned the SoCon’s automatic bid to the FCS playoffs. Huesman completed 13-of-17 passes for 192 yards and rushed 15 times for 118 yards and two touchdowns in the win. It is the 13th time in his career that Huesman has won a weekly award, and he is now tied with Armanti Edwards (Appalachian State, 2006-09) for the second-most weekly awards in league history, trailing only Adrian Peterson (Georgia Southern, 1998-01), who was honored 14 times. 

Other Nominees: Alex Lakes (Mercer), Devlin Hodges (Samford), Detrez Newsome (Western Carolina) and Lorenzo Long (Wofford).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Zach Jackson, Mercer, Jr., S, Snellville, Ga.

Zach Jackson helped bookend a strong defensive effort by the Bears as Mercer claimed a 27-20 overtime win at Furman on Saturday. The junior was credited with a forced fumble that went out of bounds on the opening play from scrimmage. With the Bears holding a 27-20 lead in the overtime period, Jackson intercepted P.J. Blazejowski at the 2-yard line on the first play of Furman’s possession to secure the win. Jackson was credited with three solo tackles in the win.

Other Nominees: Shaheed Salmon (Samford), Nakevion Leslie (Chattanooga), Daniel Riddle, (Western Carolina) and Jaleel Green (Wofford).

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Anthony Pistelli, Samford, Sr., PK, Thomasville, Ga.

Samford’s Anthony Pistelli was named the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. The senior connected on all three field-goal attempts and was 4-for-4 on PATs in Samford’s 37-27 win at Wofford. Pistelli converted field goal attempts from 19, 27 and 19 yards out. The Thomasville, Ga., native also averaged 66.8 yards on six kickoffs.

Other Nominees: Henrique Ribeiro (Chattanooga) and Ian Berryman (Western Carolina).
