Mocs Resurrecting Fullback Position This Spring

Chattanooga-(WDEF) New Mocs coach Tom Arth has brought a pro-style offense to Chattanooga, which includes a fullback.
You don’t see that once familiar position much anymore in college football with so many teams running out of the spread formation.
New Mocs coach Tom Arth has always been a fan of a fullback.
Said Arth:”Just the whole mentality that they bring to your offense. The physicality and the style that is our goal to play with.”
But when Arth got to Chattanooga, there was no fullback on the UTC roster.
So they turned to 5’7, 220-pound linebacker Torrez Finney.
Said Finney:”Actually coach (Justin) Rascati, the offensive coordinator, he said man, boy. You look like a fullback, and I need a fullback. I use those in my offense.”
Chattanooga doesn’t have a big, bruising running back, so Finney believes he can help the running game from his fullback position.
Said Finney:”I think fullback can open up the holes for a lot of smaller running backs because you know now, running backs are fast and shifty, but they’re not as big as some. There’s a good old quote by Bill Parcells. You can’t win championships if you can’t get one yard.”
Arth hopes adding a fullback will give UTC an edge off the field as well.
Said Arth:”Yeah, I think fullbacks and tight ends in the traditional sense in a lot of ways are lost. I think that’s a real positive for us because we can go out and recruit those guys because there’s not going to be a whole lot of people that are going to value that position or those positions more than we will.”
But has Arth ever flirted with using a big defensive lineman at fullback on a consistent basis?
Said Arth:”To pull a defensive lineman away from practice time that he needs and the install that he needs to be as effective as he can be for our defense is tough. So it’s more of a situational type of roll.”
Meanwhile, Finney wants to show that the Mocs made a great decision to let him play the fullback position.
Said Finney:”I want to be the best fullback this team has ever seen. I want to be the best fullback in the nation. That’s my goals.”
