Mocs Rusty Wright: “I Love the Way Jay Person Plays Football”

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Big defensive lineman Devonnsha Maxwell may be the bell-cow of the Mocs defense, but teams can’t go to sleep on pass rusher Jay Person. The Bradley Central grad has two sacks in two games, and he has the tools to rack up a bunch more.

Said head coach Rusty Wright:”Jay has come a long way since we got him. Thankful we have him. He’s one of those kind of guys that you go ohhhh, and then all of a sudden he makes a play.”
Reporter:”Is he a prototypical pass rusher?”
Said Wright:”He is getting there. He’s getting to be that way. Like I said. He’s long. Athletic. Can bend. Cut the corner. But he has worked hard at that.”
Said Person:”Oh yeah. I feel better. We’ve been doing a lot of stuff in the weight room. I feel more flexible. More loose. Bend a little bit better.”
Said quarterback Preston Hutchinson:”I’m aware of where Jay Person is at in practice where I play him every day. He’s such a good player.”
Reporter:”He can’t tackle you in practice. Will he joke with you.”
Said Hutchinson:”Thank God he can’t. Thank God he can’t. But no he’s a hell of a player. He makes our tackles better. He makes me better. Makes me get the ball out of my hands a little faster.”
Reporter:”Do you have to constantly work on different moves that you hope will allow you to break free of that contact?”
Said Person:”Yeah I like to do the shoulder lean. The ghost move a lot. Just get away from them. Gotta go head up with some of those bigger guys.”
Reporter:”What’s the ghost move?”
Said Person:”Basically the shoulder duck you were doing over there. Run up on them. Take two or three steps, and then just kind of give them a little duck. Then a lot of times they can’t. They’re too big. They can’t bend down with you and get it.”
Reporter:”Ever done one of those spin moves or what’s the best move you’ve ever done?”
Said Person:”Spin move. That’s what I’m working on now. I try to get. Ben and D-Mac. That’s one of their best moves. I’m trying to get them to teach me a lot of times.”
Said Wright:”I love the way Jay Person plays football. He is relentless. He plays with a passion to get there. He usually arrives in a bad mood. He’ll have a chance. If he keeps working and progressing to go play on Sundays because he has got that length and ability and can run.”>
