Mocs Seek Depth and New Playmakers During Spring Practice
Mocs head football coach Russ Huesman says spring practice is a time to experiment.
And it’s a lot easier to experiment when you have good players.
Huesman is anxious to see some new guys step up to build depth before UTC closes out their spring sessions.
With no games on the horizon, where do players find motivation for spring practice?
Said quarterback Jacob Huesman,"Well first off, it’s nice to be out of mat drills."
When you put it like that, spring practice doesn’t sound so bad.
Said defensive back Lucas Webb,"This is just a time where we can all get better individually and as a team."
Added head coach Russ Huesman,"I think in the spring you put the ball down, and you see who can make plays. Whether it’s in a scrimmage situation or whether it’s a one-on-one situation, whatever it is, you put it down and you try to get them as many snaps as you can."
UTC made a lot of plays last year posting the best season in school history with a 10-4 record, including a perfect run through the SoCon.
Now the Mocs hope to use spring practice as a building block to make next season even better.
Said Russ,"Last year we played with a chip on our shoulder because we were left out of the playoffs (the year before). This year, I hope they’re hungry because they got a taste of the playoffs to see how much fun it is."
Said Jacob on maintaining high expectations,"We went through some years of being kind of the surprise team a little bit I guess. It is nicer to be in that position, and we’ve got to make sure we do what we’ve got to do to stay on top."
Said Webb,"We’re trying to reach the national championship of course. We came up short, but I believe it’s definitely something we can fix, and it’s something we can obtain."
