Mocs softball completes ETSU sweep

GoMocs-The Chattanooga softball team put together a second straight sweep, taking all three from ETSU with a series finale 10-0 win in five innings Sunday afternoon at Frost Stadium.

The Mocs put up seven runs in the first inning and added three more over the next two to get a run-rule victory over the Bucs. Chattanooga improves to 24-8 on the year and remains undefeated at 6-0 against the Southern Conference with back-to-back series sweeps. ETSU drops to 5-22 overall and 0-6 against the conference.

Kailey Snell was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a stolen base. Camryn Cernuto, Olivia Lipari, Kendall Forsythe and Jayce Purdy each had one hit and Purdy drove in a pair. Chattanooga had four doubles, three stolen bases and one sac fly in the win.

The Mocs defense ended the top of the first on a double play hit back to Peja Goold in the circle. She connected with Snell to get the runner out at second and on to Forsythe at first to complete the double play.

Snell led off the Mocs’ half of the first with a single. She stole second and moved to third on a hit by Cernuto up the middle. Baileigh Pitts’ sac fly to center sent Snell home.

Forsythe walked and Kaili Phillips was plunked for the 10th time this season, loading the bases. Purdy doubled into the gap in right center sending Cernuto and Forsythe home to make it a 3-0 game.

With two outs in the inning and two on, Addy Keylon popped up to short center field. The fielder couldn’t hang onto the popup and Keylon ended up at second on the error while Phillips and Purdy scored UTC’s fourth and fifth runs.

Acelynn Sellers went to first after getting hit by the pitch and with two on, Snell came to the plate for the second time in the inning. She doubled into left center past the outfielders who were pulled in. That sent Keylon and Sellers home to give Chattanooga a 7-0 lead.

Goold struck out the first batter of the second but ETSU loaded the bases. The Mocs got back-to-back plays at the plate, however, to end the inning. The last was a weak hit that made it out in front of the plate. Purdy grabbed the ball and swiped back to tag the runner on the leg for the last out.

Lipari doubled to lead off the second inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Forsythe doubled her home with a shot into left center.

In the third, the Mocs scored two more runs starting with back-to-back walks. Snell beat out a sac bunt attempt back to the pitcher. However, an overthrow to first scored Keylon and Sellers moved to third on the error.

The final run was a fielder’s choice to the shortstop that got Snell out at second, but Sellers easily scored to make it a 10-0 game.

ETSU got a runner to third in the fourth inning, but, with two outs, Goold struck out the final batter to end the threat.

Goold earned the win and struck out four through four innings. She allowed three hits and got the shutout.
