Mocs Softball Splits Double Header With Western Carolina
(gomocs.com) CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Chattanooga Mocs softball team split it’s Thursday Southern Conference double header with Western Carolina, taking the first game by a 6-2 margin and falling 2-1 in the second at Warner Park.
Kaili Phillips went 3-for-5 (.600) on the day with a pair of doubles and a home run with five RBI. Olivia Lipari (2-3) and Zoe Wright (2-6) each had a pair of hits while Lipari and Sellers both recorded RBIs. Peja Goold got the win in game on, coming on in relief with one out in the fourth and Taylor Long recorded six strikeouts in game two.
GAME ONE: CHATTANOOGA 6, WESTERN CAROLINA 2
Kaili Phillips went 3-for-3 with a home run and a pair of doubles, driving in five runs in the Mocs 6-2 win over Western Carolina Thursday afternoon at Warner Park.
The Catamounts got on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the first inning. However, that lead would not last long.
With one out and a pair runners aboard on singles, Phillips blasted a shot to left field to put the Mocs up 3-1 and never trailed again.
Western Carolina tried to make a game of it, cutting the lead to one run with a homer in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the inning with a pair of outs, Lipari was hit by the pitch and opened the door for Phillips to hit a double, driving her home from first to give UTC a 4-2 lead.
Goold came into the game in the fourth with one out and two on. She struck out the last two batters to get out of the inning and stop the Catamount threat.
Chattanooga added another pair of runs in the fifth. Keylon led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Emily Coltharp laid down a bunt in front of the plate to reach first and advance Keylon to third. Coltharp then stole second to put runners in scoring position.
Lipari’s sac fly plated Keylon and Phillips sent a first-pitch double to center to score Coltharp from third.
Chattanooga defense sat down the Catamounts in order in the fifth and sixth innings. WCU’s lead off batter reached on balls, but a pair of fielder’s choice would hold the Cats at first and the game ended on a flyout to center.
Goold improved to 6-6 on the year. Chattanooga scored six runs on six hits with all six coming from the top of the lineup.

GAME TWO: CHATTANOOGA , WESTERN CAROLINA
Western Carolina used a home run in the sixth to earn a 2-1 win over Chattanooga in the second game Thursday at Warner Park.
Chattanooga’s lone run came in the bottom of the first. The Mocs loaded the bases with a single, double and walk. Acelynn Sellers grounded out to second advancing the runners and scoring Zoe Wright for a 1-0 early lead.
An error in the third allowed the Catamounts run to tie the game 1-1.
On a 3-2 count, Western Carolina hit a lead-off home run to take the lead and eventually the win. The Mocs stranded six including one in both the sixth and seventh.
Taylor Long went all seven innings with six strikeouts and one earned run and no walks.

Chattanooga moves to 18-17 overall and 1-4 in SoCon play while the Catamounts improve to 13-18 on the year and 3-5 against the conference.
