Mocs Survive “Trap” At Tennessee Tech, Cruise To 38-17 Win
UTC Quarterback Jacob Huesman had a hand in all five Mocs touchdowns, powering past Tennessee Tech 38-17. After clinching a outright SoCon title and their first playoff berth in 30 years, the non-conference trip figured to have all the makings of a "trap" game, with the regular season finale next week at Furman.
After a sluggish start, the Mocs put up the first points of the afternoon on a two yard touchdown run from Jacob Huesman. Tech responded with a drive of their own, but UTC held the Eagles on three downs from the Mocs two yard line, forcing a TTU field goal that cut the lead to 7-3.
UTC responded with an 11 play, 77 yard scoring march. The highlight of the drive came on 4th and 7 from UTC’s own 38. The Mocs faked a punt, instead executing a direct snap to Taharin Tyson who rumbled 24 yard for a first down. The drive culminated in a 25 yard scoring hookup from Huesman to Richardre Bagley, which upped UTC’s lead to 14-3.
Tennessee Tech struck quickly on the following possession, finding pay dirt on a 64 yard touchdown run from Ladari Vanlier. The extra point once again cut UTC’s lead to four at 14-10, but that’s as close as the Eagles would get the rest of the way.
Late in the first half, the Mocs seized the momentum for good, scoring two touchdowns in less than a minute.
The onslaught began when Huesman hit Tyson for a 2 yard score to give UTC a 21-10 lead. On Tennessee Tech’s first play from scrimmage following the UTC score, the Mocs’ Keionta Davis burst through the Eagles line and leveled quarterback Darian Stone. Davis recovered the ensuing forced fumble to set UTC up at the Tech 16 yard line. Three plays later, Huesman tossed his third scoring strike of the afternoon, a 9 yard pass to Tommy Hudson, to give the Mocs a commanding 28-10 lead.
UTC carried that lead into the locker room, eventually rolling on to a 38-17 win.
Huesman ended his huge day with 234 yards passing and four scores through the air, adding 96 yards and a 5th score on the ground. Keon Williams had another afternoon of tough running, rushing for 89 yards on 22 carries.
Chattanooga racked up 457 total yards while limiting Tech to just 171 yards on the day.
UTC closes out the regular season next Saturday at Furman. A victory would give the Mocs their first undefeated SoCon mark in school history, and their first nine win season since 1979.
