Mocs Tight End Jay Gibson Enjoying 7th Season of College Football
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) It seems Mocs tight end Jay Gibson has been with UTC since their days at Chamberlain Field.
Besides good size, the Cleveland native and McCallie grad brings that coach on the field experience.
Jay Gibson admits it’s weird playing college football for seven seasons.
Said Gibson:”I’m definitely the oldest guy on the team this year. There are no other seventh years. Feels a little different hanging out with 18-year-olds now than it did five years ago when I was twenty.”
Reporter:”Do they joke with you about your age?”
Said Gibson:”Oh yeah. My birthday was last week. I got a lot of grandpa jokes.”
Reporter:”Are you one of those who call him Grandpa?”
Said defensive back Josh Battle:”No. I call him uncle though.” (chuckles)
Coach Wright digs having Uncle Jay.
Said head coach Rusty Wright:”I’m thankful he decided to play another year. You’ve got a six year or whatever year he is in. 6’5, 250-pound tight end that has played a lot of football. You can put him at the point of attack. He can set an edge. He can catch the football as well. He’s smart. Knows how to make sure people are lined up the right way. He is just as good as the quarterback. Been in the system for awhile.”
Said Gibson:”Chase (Artopoeus) actually said that in the middle of one of our drives Saturday. He’s like I like having you out there. It’s almost like having another quarterback out here. You know what everybody is doing.”
Team Gibson would describe Jay’s family.
Said Gibson:”I’m the ninth of ten kids. I’ve got five older sisters. Three older brothers and one younger. My family does come up in discussions every now and then. Normally it revolves around people asking if I’m Catholic, Mormon, or if we all have the same parents. Any home or away game there’s about 15 to 20 Gibson’s in the stands.”
Before his career is over, Gibson may wind up with as many college degrees as siblings.
Said Gibson:”I’ve got an undergrad in business management. Masters in business administration. Then I’m getting a certificate in educational leadership.”
Reporter:”What about a doctorate?”
Said Gibson:”No doctorate. Maybe if we’ve get the 8th year of football then we’ll work on the doctorate.”
