Mocs Volleyball Team Ready to Defend SoCon Title
Chattanooga-(WDEF) The UTC volleyball team enjoyed a lot of success last year, and they hope the good times continue again in 2016.
Chattanooga won their first Southern Conference title since 1997.
Now the Mocs want to make it back-to-back league titles, as they get ready to crank up their new season Friday.
Claiming your first conference title in nearly 20-years does a lot for team morale, and your gym decor, as UTC added another year to their championship banner.
Said UTC player Allie Davenport-“We definitely want to feed off last season. It gets us excited every time we see our rings or see our number on the banner. So year, it definitely drives us.”
Said head coach Travis Filar-“It is a good reminder. I think it also keeps’em hungry because like I said, they don’t want to be just a one-hit wonder. They don’t want to put just one number up there or one year up there. They want to duplicate it.”
Duplicating another championship season will not be easy.
Chattanooga must replace four starters, and everyone in the SoCon will be gunning’ for ’em.
Said Filar-“We know the conference will be circling our match and that hasn’t happened, so it’s a different type of pressure right. It’s a different type of mentality that our kids have got to have.”
If the Mocs play with the right mentality, then Coach Filar believes his team should be in good shape.
Said Filar-“We’ve got as much talent if not more this year. I think we’re maybe even a little bit more athletic than we were last year. We’ve got more depth this year than we did last year.”
Said UTC player Kristy Wieser-“We have a sprint test at the beginning of the year. We all kind of ran it just to see what are metrics were. Everyone was just up in their numbers. We have so many options that it’s scary. It’s going to be a fight and a battle every day to see who is going to be out there.”
And the team is ready to carry that fight to the floor.
Said Davenport-“We all have a similar idea and a similar goal in mind of what we want to reach, and we know what we have to do to get there.”
