‘MORE THAN PINK Walk’ to be held in September
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The annual ‘MORE THAN PINK Walk’ is coming up in just a few weeks.
Susan G. Komen raises funds and awareness for breast cancer research.
The ‘MORE THAN PINK Walk’ spans across the country with Tennessee events taking place in Chattanooga and Nashville.
Historically, the walk has been held on streets in downtown Chattanooga.
Due to weather restraints last year, event organizers moved the walk to inside of Hamilton Place Mall.
They are continuing last year’s celebration at the mall this September.
“This is really important for the breast cancer community. And Komen does a fantastic job of creating events coast to coast for the breast cancer community. What’s wonderful about events like this, is that it’s open to everybody. Sometimes it can be uncomfortable, ‘Oh I don’t know if that’s for me.’ But what’s wonderful is this is for you. It’s for our community. And everyone is a part of this,” Hamilton Place Mall Marketing Director Jason Heymann said.
“We’re all in some way – whether it’s directly or just a few degrees from somebody we know– affected by breast cancer. So, we all get to come together and celebrate hope and celebrate community. So don’t be shy, come and experience. It’s all free because it’s about celebrating each other,” Heymann said.
The walk will take place on September 16th. Registration is free and open to all ages.
“The Chattanooga walk is just a very special day. It’s super special for survivors, those that champion for those survivors… whether it’s someone’s husband or daughter or son,” Executive Director (Susan G. Komen) Joshua Daniel said.
“It’s an opportunity for us all to come together and just celebrate those that are in it. Those that have come out of it… And those we have lost. It’s really to honor them as well,” Daniel said.
The event kicks off with open registration at 7 a.m. and the ceremony beginning at 9 a.m., with the walk following at 9:30 a.m.
“Get involved, come out that morning and help us raise money to really break down barriers for women facing breast cancer through our advocacy work. To help fund research that is really the deciding factor in a lot of people continuing to survive and thrive,” Daniel said.
