More To The Story: Shufords Reopening

Restaurant was closed down after Signal Mtn Boulevard mudslide

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Jeff Davis knows barbeque. Better than most. As the owner of Shufords Smokehouse, since the mid-80’s, Jeff’s built his business into one of Chattanooga’s more well known eateries. But now, he’s looking forward to moving back home.

Home, you say? Yes, to this place. On Signal Mountain Road. It’s been a lonely place for three years. Empty.

Because of what happened back in February of 2019. When a mudslide destroyed the restaurant next door. The city then condemned Davis’s building.

He was forced to move….about four miles down the road. On Dayton Boulevard. Some of his customers followed. Many did not.

DAVE STALEY, NEWS 12 NOW;
“You know what they say about buying a business or a home: location, location, location. Jeff Davis can testify to that. He says he lost more than half a million dollars moving to this location on Dayton Boulevard.”

JEFF DAVIS, OWNER;
“I didn’t realize I was that busy over there. I worked so hard and I really didn’t think about it. After I got kicked out and came over here, I thought, ‘I was busy over there.’ ”

It was a long journey for Davis to get the condemned sign removed from his old digs.
But when his friend, contractor Bill Clegg stepped in to help, the wheels began to spin. Working with the city. And a geological company. It took about five months. Some two weeks ago, Davis received the good news. He could go home.

BILL CLEGG, GENERAL CONTRACTOR;
“They all had the right attitude. What do we need to do to get this man’s business back on line. That was the objective.”

MADISON DAVIS TAYLOR, JEFF’S DAUGHTER;
“That is his child. I’m his kid, but that’s his baby. It’s his whole life. He wanted to finish the rest of his life working there.”

JEFF DAVIS, OWNER;
“I sleep in my house. I live down there. I give the glory to God. He took it from me and he gave it back to me. I have a different mindset now.”

Davis says the old place needs some new paint and a little bit of fixing. But hopefully, after the first of the year, Shufords……will return to its rightful location.
