More To The Story with Staley: Don Poole
Dave talks to the retiring judge
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – It was a special Thursday afternoon for Boyd Patterson. As the newly elected 11th District Criminal Court Judge, he takes the oath of office from retiring judge Don Poole.
With the oath, comes the transfer of the robe. A new era begins!
But WEDNESDAY afternoon, it was all about Don Poole. Hanging up that robe after 17 years on the bench. Dating back to 2006.
A number of supporters, administrators and lawyers who practiced before him, gathering for a going-away bash.
The judge thought it was all “pretty cool”……but admitted his feelings were all over the place.
“I have mixed emotions. I’m happy. I’m excited. And I’m a little sad. Sad that it’s coming to an end. Those are my emotions right now.”
Poole spent three decades practicing law. As a prosecutor and a defense attorney. So he had the credentials to sit on the bench.
Jay Morgan, a longtime friend, says Poole was well liked. Seemingly, by even those he had to send to jail.
Accordingly, Morgan says Poole was a perfect fit for a very difficult job.
“It’s so rare to have a true practitioner who knew all about everything going on. I’m 99 percent sure he was never reversed on any ruling.”
Poole, who’s now in his 80’s, says he really enjoyed being a judge. He’ll continue to teach Sunday School. As for the law……well……maybe……
“I don’t have any legal plans right now. But maybe something might come along. I still want to be a lawyer. I still might do something in that field.”
Poole says he plans on doing some traveling with his wife. He might even take some college courses. In history.
