More To The Story with Staley: Electric Truck

Dave sees the Electric Truck at Covenant Logistics

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Matt McLelland is the Vice President of Sustainability and Innovation for Covenant Logistics.

He’s showing us what he believes to be the first 100 percent Class-8 Battery Electric Truck in Chattanooga.

It’s all part of the company’s decarbonization efforts. The drive to go all electric. All green.

As McLelland says, make no mistake. It’s not just the wave of the future. It’s now. Right now.

“It’s here. It’s available. You can buy one today. In a few years, we’ll have hydrogen trucks. This is just one of several tools for us. Such as compressed natural gas. Now, there are other alternatives out there. But right now, today, this is the best solution.”

With the “flat in front” look…… the old days…….this bad boy can pull a regular 53 foot trailer. McLelland says with more torque and acceleration than a regular diesel powered cab.
I found that out myself…..sitting in the passenger seat…….

The speed tops out in the 60 mile per hour range. And once you hit 300 miles on your trip, you best be looking for a charging station. It’ll take three hours to charge ‘er up.

But McLelland says this electric machine will change the life of its drivers. In every way possible.

“For 90 days, one of our experienced drivers drove this truck. When he returned after the first day, he said his fatigue was lower. And his excitement was higher. He almost threatened to quit if we took the truck away from him!”

McLelland says trucks such as this can’t help but improve recruitment.

The vehicle is here in town, on a trial basis, until the end of the year.
