National Walk to a Park Day with Mayor Tim Kelly

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- A group of students from Clifton Hills Elementary School accompanied Mayor Tim Kelly on a walk to Caruthers Park today.

Together with Trust for Public Land, Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors, the goal is to have a park that is a ten-minute walk away in every community.

Caruthers Park is located on Rossville Boulevard and is a 3-acre green space that serves approximately 1,000 residents within a 10-minute walking distance.

The park features a walking path, pavilion, picnic area, playground, and a youth-sized soccer pitch in District 7.

The event kicked off as Tennessee Mayor walked with the group of 5th grade students over to the park.

There was music, activities, and even a chance to receive information about various City resources.

Following the stroll, Kelly read a proclamation in front of the young students declaring October 10th as National Walk to a Park Day, encouraging all residents to visit their
neighborhood parks and enjoy the outdoor spaces available.

Mayor Tim Kelly of Tennessee says, “It’s a great day out here. It’s Caruthers Park and it’s a ten-minute walk to a park day so the idea is to have a park 10 minutes of everybody and, again, we just walked over from Cliffton Elementary, and it was a beautiful walk. Took less than 10 minutes.”

City officials and park staff are encouraged to engage with the community and better understand how this park was used as an example for the neighborhood’s community visions for future generations.

Here in Chattanooga, the hope and vision are to give communities access to a well-taken care set of parks.
