New Chester Frost fishing pier named after community leader

HIXSON, Tenn. (WDEF)- Chester Frost Park celebrated two new features to their park Friday morning.

However, those who attended were also celebrating the life of a man who loved his time on the lake.

The brand new fishing pier has a special meaning to Patti Wright and many of her friends and family.

The pier is named after George Wright, who operated a home construction business and was an avid supporter of many local organizations and schools.

He passed away after a battle with cancer earlier this year.

His widow, Patti Wright, said, “Coming here and look and see what is here that has been built for everybody because he loved this park.”

Commissioner Gene-O Shipley added, “He was very successful but he was also very sharing in the things he done. He would never, ever refuse to give money to children.”

Friends and family say that Wright spent much of his leisure time fishing at Chester Frost Park.

They say if he had gotten to see the modern fishing pier, he would have absolutely loved it.

“He did so much for everything. Trying to get everything for the campers and, Chris, he knows how much George out into this, trying to make this right for everybody,” said Wright.

In part due to his advocacy, four new yurts have opened up to guests at Chester Frost Park, the first yurts in a park ran by Hamilton County.

The park’s superintendent believes these yurts will open up the camping experience to far more people.

Kelly Howington, Chester Frost’s superintendent, said, “Following kind of the patterns of a lot of state parks and national parks, trying to provide accommodations that are available for people that don’t necessarily have camping gear. You might not have a fifth wheel, you might not have a tent, but this gives the opportunity for families to come out and enjoy the beautiful scenery that’s here and the amenities that make up Chester Frost Park and make it a real draw for the county.”

Renting a yurt costs $75 dollars a night, and reservations have opened up online on the Hamilton County Parks website.
