New Field Among Changes For Soddy Daisy Football

Soddy Daisy, TN-(WDEF-TV) The Soddy Daisy football team won only three games last year, and they endured three shut-outs.
So plenty of work to be done this spring, especially with a new head coach.
News 12’s Brian Armstrong has more on the Trojans spring drills.

Said quarterback Coulter Johnson:”It helps us get prepared, um, work as a team.”

Soddy Daisy has been using the past two weeks of spring practice to help build a culture under new head coach Josh Owensby.

Said Owensby:”The kids have come out, responded for what we’ve asked ’em to do. They’ve been really physical and that was our big MO coming into spring. Try to kind of create a culture of, you know, having a physical football team. And I feel like they’ve answered that.”

Even though Owensby is the new head coach for Soddy Daisy, he was the team’s OC last year, so they already have that familiarity.

Said Owensby:”I think it helps us tremendously being able to get out here early with them and work with them.”

Said Johnson:”We had him last year as offensive coordinator. You know, I feel like we’ve got the formula to, you know, get Soddy Daisy football back on track.”

Said Owensby:” I feel like the guys I’ve hired have done a great job and we’re excited and we’ll see where this thing goes.”

Players are using this spring time to make an early statement as who should be the starters, even while other players are busy playing spring sports.

Said Owensby:”We got a couple offensive linemen that we know who they are. And everybody else, you know, will compete for positions. You know, we’ve got two quarterbacks out here today. We got one in base, two in baseball. So you know, that quarterback thing is going to go through June, end of July.”

Battles for positions is just one of the challenges of spring practice.

The weather is another battle.

Said Johnson:”It’s a challenge, but, uh, I think that just helps us overall come together and be able to work together. ”

Said Owensby:”What better time to learn this together, like, hey, you gotta adjust on the fly. You know, it’s good for kids to learn, hey, everything ain’t gonna go as scripted, ever.”

And come the fall, Soddy will be competing on a new turf field.

Said Owensby:”I feel like we got the best facilities in Hamilton County, and now we’re adding a turf field to it. So, super excited about our facilities, the turf field’s gonna be great.”
