New Findings Show Decline in Teen Suicidal Thoughts and Attempts
(WDEF)- The latest national findings reveal a hopeful trend: suicidal ideation and attempts among teens are on the decline. Experts say this shift reflects growing awareness and support around mental health.
Open conversations about well-being, early intervention, and teaching emotional coping skills are making a measurable difference in how young people handle challenges.
“It’s these conversations—these internal conversations—that have been missing for a long time. Or they were there, but they just weren’t heard,” one expert explained. “I’m happy that the conversations are more present, more prevalent, and available for kids of all ages.”
Mental health advocate Stoia suggests concrete steps families and schools can take: encourage honest conversations, help teens build coping strategies, and promote self-care routines. These approaches, she says, help young people navigate difficult times with more confidence.
“You can use internal energy as your words,” Stoia added. “It’s important to understand ourselves internally and energetically, just as much as it is physically with our body.”
As more programs and resources expand across communities, experts hope the downward trend continues—giving teens the support they need to grow up resilient, healthy, and emotionally strong.
