New inmate electrical vocational program officially open

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) —  The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) officially announced the opening of a new inmate electrical vocational program.

Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett announced the new program September 9, 2024.

This program was implemented at the Hamilton County Jail and Detention Center, expanding the agencies re-entry program.

Inmates are given the opportunity to train in the electrical services field, and provide skills to help find and maintain a job after release.

The program is funded by an OCJP Evidence-Based Program Grant.

HCSO said in a Facebook post that inmates will also be given the opportunity to continue to their education at Chattanooga State by transferring hours they receive through the vocational program.

“The HCSO is proud to partner with County Mayor Wamp to use grant funding to support the educational and vocational needs of the inmates in the Hamilton County Jail and Detention Center. Our goal here is clear… We want to help inmates receive the services and occupational training necessary to reduce recidivism, earn a livable wage, and experience a productive life upon release and this funding will allow us this opportunity,” said Sheriff Garrett.
