CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- There is a new nursing school in the Scenic City.

Lincoln Memorial University held their grand opening for their newest Caylor School of Nursing building in the Unum Building downtown.

This is one of five nursing campuses across the southeast including other campuses in Knoxville and Tampa, along with LMU’s main campus in Harrogate, Tennessee.

Local leaders came together to express hope that this new campus, which will have its first cohort begin this fall, will help turn around an ongoing nursing shortage.

The Dean of the Caylor School of Nursing, Tammy Dean, “We have hospitals who are begging to come in to speak to our students, to try to recruit our students. Here in the Chattanooga area we want to work with Erlanger, CHI Memorial, we want to bring our students to those facilities.”

Dean stated that out of three million registered nurses in the U-S, only 70 percent are currently working, and that the average age of a nurse is 52.

Combined with an aging population, she says that it is imperative to create the next generation of nurses.
