New Senate Bill could legalize guns on college campuses

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Tennessee Senator Joey Hensley sponsored Senate Bill 827 this week.

The bill would allow enhanced handgun carry permit holders to legally carry firearms onto college campuses.

To obtain an enhanced handgun permit, one must be 21 years old or 18 years old and an honorably charged veteran.

Senator Hensley believes that this bill will enable students to act in self defense, “I hope to allow people to be able to defend themselves when they’re going to a college campus…I just don’t think people should surrender their constitutional right to bear arms, they shouldn’t give that up just because they’re on a college campus.”

The bill will be voted on in the Judiciary Committee in March before going to the Senate and House of Representatives.

We will update you as this bill progresses.
