New Veterans Resource Center will battle vet homelessness

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – With community support and funding, Chattanooga will soon have a Veterans Resource Center.

And as of Wednesday, planners have a place to put it.

Several companies donated equipment and manpower to begin clearing property at 747 East 11th street.

It will be called the Chattanooga Unite Veterans Resource Center to recognize sacrifices like the five service members killed by a terrorist last year.

Organizers plan a full-service facility to meet veteran’s needs.

Joedee Hulgan donated the property.

“We donated the building to the veterans coalition to help get the homeless veterans off the street ..Get them in, get them rehabbed..get them back out in the community.”

Capt. Michey McCamish added “this is really being proactive in terms of preventing the veteran from becoming homeless, by giving the veteran when they’re released from active duty..providing him the resources that they need so that they don’t become homeless.”

Members of the group plan to ask the Veterans Administration for some of the funding.

Figures show an estimated 100 homeless vets in the Scenic city.
