News 12 Then: Looking back at the Tennessee Aquarium Dedication on May 1, 1992
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Tennessee Aquarium officially opened it’s doors on May 1st, 1992.
It all began with a fish parade through downtown with kids dressed up as fish.
Music surrounded the plaza, there were food demonstrations and an international fair.
The dedication itself paid tribute to Aquarium donor/financier Jack Lupton (who according to his tradition, did not speak publicly).
Governor Ned McWherter, Mayor Gene Roberts, County Executive Dalton Roberts (no relation, not even close) Congresswoman Marilyn Lloyd and Aquarium President Carey Hanlin all spoke.
And then the first official visitors entered the doors.
WDEF aired a 90 minute live show from the dedication.
These are some of the highlights from that historic show and dedication.
