Next phase of Walnut Street Bridge renovation set to begin
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Work on the Walnut Street Bridge is entering a new phase this week as crews focus efforts on restoring the bridge’s northern span.
Starting Monday and continuing through Tuesday, construction teams will raise protective tarps over span six to create a sealed containment area.
This setup includes specialized hoses and vacuum systems designed to safely remove old paint while protecting the environment.
On Wednesday, crews will begin sandblasting within the containment area, followed by applying a three-layer protective coating—primer, intermediate, and topcoat.
This process ensures each section is fully treated before moving to the next viaduct, helping to prevent rust and preserve the structure.
Once span six is complete, the restoration will move to the next section, following the same sequence.
“We’re pleased with the progress being made and appreciate the public’s patience as we move through each phase.”
-Eric Booker, Construction Engineering Manager for the Department of Public Works.
The renovation of the Walnut Street Bridge remains on track for completion in Fall 2026.
City officials say the work is being done with a focus on safety, durability, and environmental care, ensuring the historic bridge remains a cherished part of Chattanooga for years to come.
