Nine Hamilton County Jail inmates charged with attempted murder

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — A Hamilton County Jail inmate nearly died after being assaulted by nine other inmates, according to the sheriff’s office.

The assault happened on Wednesday, January 24 at about 10:30 a.m. in the Delta 2 pod of the jail.

Authorities say the inmate was beaten unconscious by nine other inmates in the pod.

They took that inmate to a local hospital for treatment. As of Friday morning, the HCSO did not specify the extent of the victim’s injuries.

The sheriff’s office obtained warrants for the suspects on Thursday, January 25.

All nine inmates are facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, especially aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated riot and criminal conspiracy to commit murder. All of these charges are felonies.

The HCSO identified these nine people as suspects responsible for the assault:

  • David Cosby
  • Jeremy Daniels
  • Jarius Ellzey
  • Lamar Evans
  • Gregory Gillespie
  • Thomas Heffner
  • Ja Quan Johnson
  • Antavius Perry

Authorities are still investigating the incident.
