Norah O’Donnell is stepping down after election

WASHINGTON D.C., (WDEF) — CBS nightly news anchor Norah O’Donnell has announced she’s stepping down after this year’s presidential election.

O’Donnell made this announcement in a memo to CBS staff Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

“I have spent 12 years in the anchor chair here at CBS News, tied to a daily broadcast and the rigors of a relentless news cycle,” stated O’Donnell.

However, Norah isn’t leaving CBS just yet.  After the election, she will step into her new role as CBS News special correspondent.

“I’m pleased to share that I have made a long-term commitment to CBS News to continue to do the same storytelling and big interviews that have been our hallmark,” said O’Donnell.

This new role will still allow her to still be apart of the network by conducting interviews and making appearances in “60 Minutes” and “CBS Evening News”.

The night-time news anchor has been at the desk for 12 years.

Before she made it into the anchor chair, Norah was CBS’s chief White House correspondent while former president Barack Obama was in office.

In 2012, O’Donnell moved up to co-hosting “CBS This Morning”, and finally took over for Jeff Glor on “CBS Evening News” in 2019.

In her statement, Norah says she sees this as an opportunity for her in this industry.

“I don’t need to tell you what a transformative time our business is facing. I see this as an opportunity.  I want to thank Wendy McMahon as this new role will also allow me to extend the reach of the work we do to new audiences in new ways.”

You can still watch Norah on the “CBS Evening News” as she continues election coverage.
