Norfolk Southern pays fine over Citico Creek diesel dumping

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Norfolk Southern Railroad will pay a $60,000 fine for damages caused by a deliberate spill of diesel fuel by a contractor last January.

According to an investigation by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, about 2,700 gallons of diesel was dumped into Citico Creek as a holding tank was being repaired at the Debuts Railroad yard in January.

Some of that diesel ended up in the Tennessee River, but none entered the Tennessee American water system.

The railroad hired workers to clean up the petroleum contaminated debris.
