North Georgia Fires Update
(WDEF) – The Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) responded to six new fires in North Georgia yesterday, utilizing a total of 172 resources.
The fire on Tatum Gulf (2336 acres) on Lookout Mountain joined with what was the Cloverdale Fire (500 acres) and is 50% contained. Currently, there are no evacuations in place. Crews have conducted a burnout and mop-up activates continue.
The Creek Road fire in Dade County (72 acres) is 99% contained and in a hold and monitor phase.
This fire at Irwin Mill Road in Gordon County (107 acres) is 99% contained. There are five homes in the immediate area, but no structural damage is expected.
Concerning previous fires that still require activity from the GFC are as follows:
The Treat Mountain fire in Polk County (558 acre) is 99% contained. Resources are cleaning out existing firebreaks while handling two new starts near this fire. These fires are 10 acres and 24 acres in size with containment at 90%. Today crews will be working on the new starts to ensure lines hold and mop-up continues.
The fire on the Brow in Dade County (175 acres) is 100% contained. Crews are monitoring and cleaning out firebreaks as needed.
The Fox Mountain fire in Dade County (2083 acres) is 100% contained. Monitoring is underway, as are cleaning out existing firebreaks.
The fire on Johnson Mountain in Bartow County (149 acres) is 100% contained. Resources are monitoring and cleaning firebreaks.
The Tower fire located in Dade County (170 acres) is 100% contained. Fire crews are monitoring.
The Rocky Face fire in Whitfield County (590 acres) is 100% contained. Resources are monitoring this fire as well.
The Rough Ridge fire being managed by the U.S. Forest Service continues to grow in size. The GFC is working with the Forest Service to track the fire’s progress and identify areas that may be at risk. This fire size is reported at 27,004 acres and specific information can be obtained by contacting the U.S. Forest Service at 470-208-2839 or e-mail roughridgefireteam1@gmail.com.
The Forest Service is also working a fire in Rabun County with a size at 9,545 acres. Questions about the Rabun fire can be directed to the U.S. Forest Service fire information center at 541-490-0961.
