Notre Dame Hopes to Ride Single Wing to Another State Title Game

Notre Dame made it to the state championship game last season running an old school offense. And the Irish are hoping the single wing will work out even better this season as they start up fall camp.

Before the Friday night thrills. It’s nothing but drills, drills, drills for Notre Dame.
Said head coach Charles Fant:”Those little tackling ring things are so great because now you don’t have to use another player to move and let your guy hit somebody. We didn’t go full pads not one day last year. We feel like we can get everything we need to get done in shells.”
Reporter:”Is there a particular drill that’s fun?”
Said linebacker Dallas Brown:”When we do our gator rolls. When we are rolling over the pads and just running right to it and gator roll it.”
The gator roll might come in handy with a new defensive coordinator.
Said Fant:”Coach David Carter came from the Memphis area at St. Georges, the former head coach there. He’s the 4-3 guru.”
Said linebacker Monroe Beard:”We have run stuff that’s similar to it. We’ve just got to get in a groove. I think Coach Carter is doing a great job on defense teaching us the new things.”
Last year was the best in Notre Dame history.
They played for their first ever state title before losing 41-13 to Lausanne.
Said Fant:”We talk a lot about that state championship because we went, and we were over-matched. Whether it was size, or it was speed, or it was scheme. So all of us, not just the kids, but he coaches came back with new life.”
The Irish return one of the best play-makers in the state in Cameron Wynn, and he’ll be running out of an old school formation.
Said Fant:”We are going to be a majority single wing this year yes. Just because of the physical nature of it. That’s become the mentality and personality of our kids.”
Reporter:”How many coaches dislike you now because you are running that single wing?” (laughter)
Said Fant:”Well the funny thing is it’s not that they dislike, they’re trying to get our film. They’re trying to figure out what we are doing. We’re kind of like, not quite yet. Let us do this for a little while. Let us understand what we are doing, and then we’ll talk to you about it.”
