Notre Dame Names Assistant Joe Winland New Head Baseball Coach
(press release) Notre Dame High School Head of School Dr. Eric Schexnaildre and Athletics Director Brian Gill have announced the promotion of Joe Winland from assistant coach to Head Baseball Coach.
Winland succeeds Gatlyn Simmons, who stepped down after leading the program for eight seasons.
Winland has served as an assistant coach, pitching coach, and English instructor at Notre Dame High School for the past three years. Since 2021, he has also worked as an Associate Coach with the National Pitching Association / Tom House Sports.
“We are excited to welcome Joe Winland as the next head baseball coach at Notre Dame High School,” said Head of School Dr. Eric Schexnaildre. “Coach Winland brings a deep knowledge of the game, a passion for developing young men, and a strong commitment to the values that define our school community. We believe his leadership, character, and vision for the future of our baseball program make him an outstanding fit for Notre Dame.”
Prior to joining Notre Dame, Winland served as an assistant varsity and head junior varsity baseball coach, and head fast-pitch softball coach at St. Pius X Catholic High School in Atlanta. During his four-year tenure as head softball coach, his teams compiled an 84-45-4 record, won four consecutive region championships, and made a state semifinal appearance.
As a player, Winland competed collegiately at the University of Richmond after a standout high school career at Marist School in Atlanta. He also played summer baseball in the nationally recognized East Cobb program under legendary coaches Guerry Baldwin and James Beavers. During that time, his teams earned an ABCA World Series runner-up finish, a Connie Mack World Series semifinal appearance, and a Babe Ruth World Series championship.
“I am honored to lead the Notre Dame High School baseball program,” said Winland. “Taking over during the school’s 150th Jubilee celebration is especially humbling. This program has a strong history and an even stronger tradition.
“My goal is to uphold that tradition by developing the whole student-athlete — skill, character, and faith. Notre Dame baseball players will compete hard on the field, carry themselves with integrity off the field, and grow in values that last far beyond the game.”
