Off-duty Chattanooga firefighter saves man’s life
SODDY-DAISY, Tenn. (WDEF) — An off-duty Chattanooga firefighter helped save a man’s life over the weekend in Soddy-Daisy.
The Chattanooga Fire Department commemorated Captain John Ives in a Facebook post on Sunday.
Captain Ives was at his son’s baseball game at Soddy-Daisy High School on Saturday when a man collapsed in the bleachers. The fire department said this man was a grandfather of one of the Rhea County players.
They said Ives “jumped into action” by determining the man did not have a pulse, starting CPR and having someone go look for an AED.
Captain Ives and others in the crowd did several rounds of CPR and delivered two shocks with the AED.
According to the fire department, the man had a pulse again by the time HCEMS arrived. He is now recovering in a local hospital.
“We know Captain Ives didn’t do what he did for any sort of recognition or attention, but we hope he knows that he is appreciated by our department and the community!” the fire department concluded in the post.
