Off-duty firefighter alerts family of garage fire in Lookout Valley

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — On Monday, an off-duty Chattanooga firefighter alerted residents that their garage was on fire and called 911.

The garage, which was not attached to a house, was on fire on Harris Lane in Lookout Valley. However, the garage was only a few feet away from the residents’ house.

The Chattanooga Fire Department (CFD) said Senior Firefighter Mark Coffman spotted the smoke after just getting off a 24-hour shift.

After seeing the fire, he knocked on the residents’ door to alert them of the fire. He then called 911, and fire crews came to the house around 7:20 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, they noticed the garage fire was fully involved and posed a danger to the house.

CFD crews fully put out the fire, which had also spread to nearby trees, grass and brush.

The fire department says no one was injured. They say crews kept the fire from spreading to the house.
