Officer indicted on vehicular homicide testifies in court

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – A Bartlett police officer is on trial after being charged with two counts of vehicular homicide in a 2014 car crash that killed two people.

The Commercial Appeal reports that 34-year-old Lucas Hines testified in court this week that he had been chasing a suspect in Oct. 2014 when his patrol car collided with another car on a major intersection.

The crash resulted in the deaths of 63-year-old Danny Floyd and 49-year-old Michelle Sloyan.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Hines was speeding before the crash, and Floyd, the driver of the second vehicle, failed to yield to oncoming traffic when he tried to make a left turn on the intersection.

Hines argued that he was speeding to catch a suspect who attempted to hit him with his car.
