Officers say the man they killed on Christmas Eve was a murder suspect

They were trying to arrest him for the murder of a woman earlier in the day

CHATTOOGAVILLE, GA (WDEF) – The Chattooga County Sheriff says the man his officers gunned down on Christmas Eve was a suspect in a murder.

He says the body of a 50 year old Summerville woman was found dumped at Johnson Cemetery Road in the southern part of the county.

They went to her home and found evidence that she had been killed there.

By the end of the day, they got an arrest warrant for 44 year old John Wayne Siffles.

But when officers from several jurisdictions arrived to arrest him, he would not come out.

Sheriff Schrader says they used non-lethal measures like OC Spray and Tasers, but they didn’t work.

The preliminary investigation that Siffles then threatened officers with a knife.

That’s when the officers fired and killed the suspect.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
