Official: Pilot killed in small plane crash in rural Georgia

JESUP, Ga. (AP) — A small plane crashed Thursday near an airport in rural southeast Georgia, killing the pilot, according to a local emergency official.

The airplane went down in Wayne County, roughly 60 miles (96 kilometers) southwest of Savannah. The National Transportation Safety Board said it’s investigating the cause of the crash near the city of Jesup. It identified the plane as a Cirrus SR22, a single-engine aircraft.

The county’s emergency management director, Donnie Ray, confirmed the pilot was killed. Officials don’t believe any other people were on board. The crash happened roughly a quarter of a mile (0.4 kilometers) from Wayne County’s small airport, news outlets reported.
