Man pleads guilty to murdering his wife in Chatsworth
CHATSWORTH, Georgia (WDEF) – Oliver Scott Cannon has accepted a plea deal for the murder of his estranged wife.
The shooting happened in September of 2017.
Prosecutors said that Johnnie Cannon left her husband because of his abuse of prescription pills. She moved in with her brother.
They say he took a gun from a relative, without permission, then drove to where she was living. Cannon knocked on the door and asked to speak with his wife.
When she stepped outside, they argued, and he pulled the gun and shot her in the heart.
He then fled to his home where police surrounded him. Cannon eventually shot himself in the jaw, but survived. (see the story above from 09/2017)
He was scheduled to go to trial in February, but, instead, entered a guilty plea today to a charge of malice murder.
Cannon was sentenced to life, but will be eligible for parole after 30 years (he would be 87 years old then).
But he avoided a life sentence without parole by taking the deal.
