ROME, Ga. (WDEF) —  One individual is dead and another injured after two water and sewer employees became trapped while doing repairs.

According to Atlanta News First, the two were in a trench repairing a sewer line when the trench caved in.

First responders were dispatched to the scene around 11:30 p.m.

It was several hours before the two could be rescued.

Both workers were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The city of Rome confirmed that one of the two had died, stating:

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear colleague, James Rayburn, a valued member of our Water Department. Rayburn, as he is affectionately known, tragically sustained a fatal injury late last night while working on a city water project. Michael Walters who was working with him also sustained minor injuries. During this incredibly difficult time, we ask that our community respect the privacy of Rayburn’s family and friends, as well as Michael Walters and his coworkers, as we grieve the loss of such a cherished individual. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with them as we all mourn together.
