Pack Like A Moc: Getting the Gear To The Game

On Saturday the Mocs have a big matchup against Citadel. This one promises to be one of the best FCS games this weekend with 2 top ten teams going head to head, but nothing would derail a game plan quicker than a player taking that long ride to Charleston and not having a helmet or shoulder pads or some other piece of equipment…Today I got to meet the crew who makes sure that everything does get there and are really the unsung heroes……

“It is a lot of work.  It is a lot of work people don’t have any clue what these kids do, and they do it everyday,” said Mike Royster, Assistant AD over Athletic Facilities and Equipment.

Billy Wilson, Head Student equipment manager, said, “What we did was we loaded the truck and got ready for our road trip to the Citadel this week, longest one of the season about 7 hours.”

“We pretty much take everything but the kitchen sink…We have a list of every trunk that is in there and what is in it,” said Royster

Really there isn’t much of a difference between a home and a road game. We kind of say every game is a road game for us,” said Wilson.

Tim Davis, assistant equipment manager, said, “The biggest part about going to Citadel is the drive. Everybody knows it is long. It takes some time but uh once you get there, it is easy.”

Wilson called Citidel’s stadium “One of the better ones of the places we go.”

“Making sure the equipment gets where it needs to be can be nerve racking, but it is worth it,” said Davis. “Sometimes it is hard. You have to be serious sometimes, but most times we in here having fun, so you don’t even notice.”
