Park planned to overlook the runway of Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- You will soon be able to watch airplanes take off near the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport.

Officials announced a park is being built on the north end of the runway on a hill.

The park is being funded from Bluecross Blueshield’s Healthy Places program.

It will feature a playground, a model airplane, and a World War II memorial.

Officials say this will allow the community to better connect with their airport.>

Jack McAfee, the Vice President of Operations of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport said, “In the 60s we had the terminal observation deck that people could watch planes take off from the airport, but after September 11, we are not allowed to have people stop inside of the airport to watch aircraft. The new terminal shut down the observation deck. We really don’t have a good area for people of the community at large to come in and observe aircraft.”

The park is expected to be open at some point in 2026.
