Pence touts conservative credentials of Blackburn, Black
CLEVELAND, Tenn. (AP) – Vice President Mike Pence has used his visit to Tennessee to praise the conservative credentials of two Republican congresswomen who are running for statewide office.
In a Saturday speech at Lee University, Pence referred to Rep. Marsha Blackburn as a “tireless, principled” leader and a “strong partner” to President Donald Trump’s administration. Blackburn is the leading GOP candidate for the seat of retiring U.S. Sen. Bob Corker.
Blackburn faces a tough fall campaign against Democrat Phil Bredesen.
Pence praised Rep. Diane Black for her support of lower taxes and efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, a health-care law also known as Obamacare. Pence also called Black a “champion for life” for her anti-abortion stand.
Black is in a crowded field of Republican candidates running for governor.
