Pet therapy benefits health of older adults, says BlueCross, Humane Society

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — BlueCross BlueShield, the Humane Educational Society of Chattanooga and Love on a Leash partnered up to offer pet therapy to older patients at a local health center.

According to the Humane Society, pet therapy is meant to improve physical and psychological health for the elderly.

These organizations held this unique therapy Tuesday afternoon at the Health Center at Standifer Place. The Health Center is a “nursing center, assisted living, adult day care, independent living, and assistive services home,” according to their website.

BlueCross BlueShield found that petting animals, like dogs and cats, can help reduce stress and blood pressure.  The Humane Society added that this therapy also helps mental stimulation, lower anxiety levels, memory recollection, reduce loneliness and boost mood.

Organizers said this program also benefitted in educating others on the health benefits that come from bonds with animals.

“We are doing this event because we have members that are homebound, which they kind of are here as far as the facility is concerned. And it reduces social isolation and improves the health of the members for us to come in and let them pet the dogs and the animals,” said BlueCross Consumer Advocate Joni Robertson.

Organizers hope these kinds of partnerships can demonstrate and promote innovative healthcare solutions.
