Pictures of the Purple Heart Ceremony for Randall Smith

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Navy Operational Support Center in Chattanooga is releasing pictures and information on the Purple Heart ceremony on Thursday for Logistics Specialist Second Class Randall Smith.

He was one of the fallen five from the July 16th shooting at the Naval Reserve.

When the FBI determined the shooter was inspired by a terrorist organization, the victims were eligible for Purple Heart awards.

The ceremony for Smith was held on January 14th, which was also his wedding anniversary.

His widow, Angie Smith, and their three daughters accepted a Purple Heart shadow box in the ceremony.

The medal, itself, was presented to his eldest daughter, Lyla.

It was presented by Cheif of Navy Reserve vice Adm. Robin Braun and Captain Matt Berta.

“Although the Purple Heart can never possibly replace this brave Sailor and these brave Marines, it is my hope that as their families and the entire Department of the Navy team continue to mourn their loss, these awards provide some small measure of solace,” Mabus said. “Their heroism and service to our nation will be remembered always.”

Braun said in a statement: "The entire Navy Reserve Force was deeply saddened at the passing of LS2 Randall S. Smith. He was a dedicated Sailor who cared deeply about his family, his community, and his country. His service and, indeed, his life will remain an inspiration for his Shipmates and all who were fortunate enough to have known him."
