Pikeville Fire Chief Swafford retires after 47 years of service
PIKEVILLE, Tenn. (WDEF) — Pikeville Fire Department Chief Paul Swafford has officially retired as of January 1, 2024.
Pikeville FD said Swafford served for the department for 47 years and was their fire chief for 26 years.
Several fire departments around the area are taking to social media to congratulate Chief Swafford on his retirement.
Assistant Fire Chief Dylan Hankins explained that Chief Swafford focused on promoting training within the department and Bledsoe County.
“Under his leadership, many personnel become certified firefighters with some seeking the emergency services industry as their life-long careers.”
The fire department added that Swafford helped form two mutual aid associations during his service.
He also served as president of the Tennessee Firemen’s Association.
“Tennessee Firemen’s Association would like to congratulate our former President, Paul Swafford, on his retirement from Pikeville FD. He has served them well as Chief for 26 years. He is still going to continue being busy with TFA and representing us throughout the state. Congratulations Chief!”
Chief Swafford served the city of Pikeville without ever being paid for his services, according to Pikeville FD.
Neighboring department, the Dunlap FD, also congratulated Swafford on his retirement.
“We want to wish the best of luck, and a very happy retirement to a great man, leader, and partner in the fire service. Chief Swafford and his department have been a vital asset for us over the years, and we are forever grateful for all he has helped with in his time as chief. Happy Retirement Chief!!!”
