EARLIER:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Chattanooga firefighters battled a scrap metal fire Tuesday morning downtown.

It happened at 2912 South Market Street in Alton Park after 8 a.m.

Firefighters originally thought it was a vehicle fire but found several of them on fire in a scrap yard.

Tires, fuel and debris were all involved.

It was a 40-foot-tall pile of scrap cars that was on fire.

Smoke was visible for miles from downtown Chattanooga.

Firefighters had to close Market Street to run the fire hoses.

Crews also used a pair of excavators to tear the pile apart while they kept two streams of water on it.
