Plea agreement reached in Snapchat extortion case
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A Tennessee man who faced charges of attempting to extort a woman by posing as a University of Tennessee football player on Snapchat has reached a plea agreement calling for an 18-month prison sentence.
Brandon Douglas Shanahan of Sweetwater has agreed to plead guilty to one count of interstate communications with intent to extort. The plea agreement recommends an 18-month prison sentence followed by one year of supervised release.
The plea will be formally entered during a hearing at a date to be determined. A sentencing date hasn’t been announced.
Shanahan was arrested in May. Prosecutors said he intended to extort money “and other things of value” from a woman.
Prosecutors said Shanahan used the name “Camsutton2323” on Snapchat and the woman believed she was speaking with corner back Cameron Sutton.
