Preston Hutchinson Emerges From Portal to Lead Mocs at Quarterback

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Quarterback Preston Hutchinson arrived at UTC last spring, and it hasn’t taken him long to make his mark at Chattanooga.
In just his second game, the Eastern Michigan transfer has been named the SoCon offensive player of the week.

With so many quarterbacks to choose from in the transfer portal, Rusty Wright felt like he was viewing a dating app.
Said head coach Rusty Wright:”Kind of like. I don’t know. Whatever it is. Tinder. Whatever it is. You just swipe. Keep swiping until you find the right one I guess. I don’t know how that works.”
And Hutchinson ‘liked’ the Mocs back because of the coaches and the weather.
Said Hutchinson:”I just wanted a place where the coaches were genuine and shot me straight. And the coaches here told me exactly where I’d be. What the situation was. I definitely was sick of Detroit weather. I didn’t like. We didn’t use the indoor facility as much as we should have. We were outside in the cold a lot.”
While Hutchinson didn’t have to battle the cold in Chattanooga, he did have to battle for the Mocs starting quarterback job.
Said Hutchinson:”I just took it day-by-day. Play-by-play. Like I’ve competed against a lot of quarterbacks. I always believe that I’m going to come out on top.”
Wright:”He can do some things with his legs compared to what Cole can do, which opens up some more things. We’re not quite as good up-front on the offensive line as we have been. Just having some escape-ability to do that.”
Hutchinson’s legs were key against Eastern Illinois.
He had two rushing runs…and at some point in the game…he picked up a shiner on his left eye.
Said Hutchinson:”After the game everyone is like dude, you have a big pimple. I’m like no, but it hurts. Then it just started formulating into a black eye. I really don’t know how it was possible, especially with my visor.”
Said Wright:”He’s a tough kid. He’s vocal. He wants to be a leader. He’s a quarterback.”
