Radiant selects Tennessee to build world’s first mass-produced nuclear generator factory
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WDEF) — Radiant, a nuclear generator company, is investing $280 million to expand their research and development into Oak Ridge, Tenn.
This was announced on Monday by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart McWhorter, and Radiant officials.
This expansion will create 175 new jobs in Roane County.
When the facility is completed, it will be developing and mass-producing Radiant’s Kaleidos, the world’s first one-megawatt portable nuclear generator.
The nuclear generator will be capable of generating power in remote areas, as well as providing resilient power options for military bases or during disaster scenarios.
Radiant is the sixth company branch into Tennessee utilizing the state’s Nuclear Energy Fund.
The $50 million fund was recommended in Gov. Lee’s 2023-2024 budge, which was approved by the Tennessee General Assembly.
An additional $10 million was approved during both the 2024 and 2025 legislative sessions, bumping the fund’s total up to $70 million.
“Tennessee is quickly emerging as the national leader in clean, reliable energy production. That’s why innovative companies like Radiant are choosing our state for cutting-edge manufacturing and R&D. I’m proud to welcome Radiant to the Tennessee family and look forward to the vital role this company will play on the global stage, producing what will become the world’s first nuclear microreactor from right here in Oak Ridge.”
