Radon Risks: What Homeowners Need to Know

Chattanooga, Tenn. (WDEF)- Radon, a colorless and odorless gas, could be putting families at risk inside their own homes.

Health officials say long-term exposure to radon can cause serious health problems. It’s the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

“Since it’s a carcinogen, radon causes the highest number of lung cancer deaths after smoking,” said Ryan Brown, Director of Environmental Health at the Hamilton County Health Department.

Officials recommend all homeowners test for radon, especially those with basements or crawl spaces. In Tennessee, one in five homes has elevated radon levels.

Free test kits are available through the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, and professionals can also be hired to test and fix the issue.
